About Y-Chat

Y-chat is a small group of Christian teenagers who come together on a Sunday night for two hours (19:30 - 21:30).
We are based at Christ Church, Woodley near Reading. Christ Church is a joint Methodist and URC Church and has just celebrated in 2007 its 25th Anniversary.

According to our original web site (developed in 2004 and filling one whole page), Y-chat is about:
"Exploring the issues that matter where your views count."

Originally the group was set up by members of the Y1 group of the Junior Church who were running out of time to discuss crucial issues and the meaning of the Bible during the Junior Church sesssions. Hence the rather pompous statement from 2004!

Nowadays we tend to just chill out, natter about life in general and join in some planned weekly activity. You can read about what we get up to on the activity page.

History

Going way back to the distant 1980s and beyond, or so our parents tell us, there used to be a similar group at Christ Church called Squash. This was so named becaused folk used to squash into a different member's living room each week. They also used to do exciting activities, but also had some leaders who lead them in singing and prayer for five minutes each week. Eventually in the 1990s there was nobody available to run the group and it stopped. So there was a gap before Y-Chat started and then there was a delay before gaining its name.

Y-Chat has been lucky in that, since when it started, there have been adults available to keep an eye on us, and join in the fun, and we are of course very thankful for them. Older teenagers have now moved on to be students or have real lives and so none of the founding members now remain. Any young person connected to the church and its groups can come along, but you have to be a rising-14 in year-9 before you can.
